The Inspiration
Ever since this book became a reality, I've been asked how, or better yet, why, I wrote it.
After my wife gave birth to our second son, I found myself awake one quiet night at the computer, compelled to somehow transform my thoughts into words.
The previous April, I was so overwhelmed with the birth of our first son, so new to the experience, it was something I could hardly grasp, yet alone describe.
Yet, there I was, some 15-months later watching my wife go through the transformation again.
This time I was able to focus more on her, how she handled everything from the positive pregnancy test to the final push at the hospital.
And as I sat at the computer that night (overwhelmed twice over now) the words just flowed.
I grew up with the best mother any person in this world could ask for, but there was no way I could truly appreciate what that meant until now.
The sacrifices my mom made for myself and my five siblings.
The never-ending commitment she displayed on a daily basis.
The job of mom that came so natural to her, while hardly easy, was a true calling.
I'd now seen those same traits in my wife, that same power that came with being called to motherhood.
The ability to overcome the fear and pain of bringing life to this world.
The sleepless days and nights.
The strength, courage, devotion, and most of all, love, required for motherhood was living itself out in front of me.
So I sat, and inspired by her, I wrote.
The final product, with inspiration from a third son, is "Love, Defined."
My wife and our three children are featured throughout "Love, Defined," but their pictures, and story, are hardly unique.
This world is filled with mothers courageous enough to endure the discomfort of pregnancy, the challenges of labor, and the joy of child birth.
And that, is where "Love, Defined" appeals to all.
"There was a time I knew what love was. But, through you, I’ve learned what Love is."
That remains my favorite line from this book. From what I've witnessed, that remains the singular defining moment of what motherhood truly is.
This project began as a thank you to my wife.
My hope is that it can serve the same purpose to the mom in your life.
